Louvier entrenchment
The Louvier entrenchment is an interesting entrenchment built by the Knights of St John around Armier bay in Mellieha, It was built in the early 1760s and formed part of the ambitious plan of surrounding the Maltese islands with entrenchments. Only a small fraction of the proposed entrenchments where ever built mainly due to lack of funds and manpower. The Entrenchment consists of a bastioned enceinte with a front of two demi-bastions linked by a curtain of wall. In the west demi-bastion there are four embrasures which were used for the artillery. The Knights also attempted to excavate a ditch in front of the entrenchment but this was never finished and remained incomplete.
A Pillbox was built on part of the entrenchment by the British as part of their coastal defense network during World War 2.
While the majority of the entrenchment is in quite a good state a number of boat houses have been built in and around whole sections of the entrenchment.
